Mexican Food in Switzerland

The lack of good Mexican food is one of the hardest things about living in Switzerland. Once we went to Tres Kilos, which is supposedly the best Mexican in the whole country, and spent 100 francs on a terribly disappointing meal. :( It's bad enough now, but when I was pregnant it was absolute torture! I craved nothing more than Mexican food. It's kind of insane, but I used to dream (like several times a week!) that J and I were walking along in Zurich, and then suddenly there was a Chipotle that we had just never noticed before! Can you imagine?! It's like those dreams New Yorkers have of discovering extra rooms in their tiny apartments. So, we would run inside and get in line, and I'd be giddy thinking about my order and then every time. Every. Single. Time. Something would happen and we would never get to the front of the line! One time the dream was so overly elaborate that a gang fight broke out, complete with gunfire and ambulances, but usually, I just woke up. So sad.

Instead of continuing to dream of Mexican food, I've learned to make it all myself. It's very time consuming, but so worth it.  What could be better than fresh guacamole and salsa made with heirloom tomatoes and lots of fresh squeezed lime juice? Mmmmm. Not much. What is your favorite food? Do you ever dream about it?

oh my gosh, this was my CONSTANT dilemma in switzerland!! the best mexican food i had there was at dona juarra's in lugano. it's $$$ and since i'm from the east coast, i can't really say i'm an expert on mexican food (i do LOVE chipotle with all my heart, if that helps you!). but their guacamole was legit (the best i had in CH), their margarita fragola was delicious enough that my student friends and i always managed to find money in our pockets for a second litre (50 CHF), and i still miss their chicken burrito. while you're there, you should get gelato at -9 (minus 9) gelateria. there are 50 million gelaterias in lugano, but they have the most innovative, freshest flavors (like greek yogurt with lemon and glazed almonds...yum!).

i think the most depressing thing about mexican food in switzerland is how hard it is to find proper salsa and not that ketchupy junk from old el paso :( ugh (though i do remember globus having a good selection?)
p.s. my senior year i discovered our town's asian market and that place was a godsend for asian/mexican foods and ingrediants. maybe there's one near you?

Hi again!!! Okay, we are going to make a trip to Ticino sometime soon anyway, so that restaurant is on my list! I totally hear you on the crappy Old El Paso salsa. EEEEW!!!! That's why I spend an hour chopping tomatoes and making my own now! ;) In Zürich there is a Mexican import store called El Mais. You can get lots of stuff there, but it's hard to leave without spending 100 CHF!! :) Oh well!
